What is Food Handler Training?
In Texas, local regulatory authorities (health department, city, county) may require Food Handler training to prevent food borne illness. Food safety training is for employees that prepare, cook and serve food as well as handle equipment and utensils.
People improperly handling food is a major factor responsible for foodborne illness. Education of the Food Handlers provides more qualified employees, thereby reducing the risk of foodborne illness outbreaks caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques.
Where is my Food Handler certificate valid?
Thornhill Training’s Food Handler certificate is valid in the State of Texas.
How long is the Food Handler certification valid?
Food Handler certification is valid for two years.
Are classes available in any other language besides English?
We currently hold public Food Handler Spanish classes in Austin. Private classes in other languages are available in the San Antonio, Houston and Austin regions. Please call Thornhill Training to find out if we can accommodate your needs.

How do I renew my Food Handler certification?
If it has been over two years since you took your previous Food Handler class then you will need to attend another class or take the online class. Food Handler certificates are only valid for two years. Please call 512.349.0400 to register or register online.
Do I need to register with the local Health Department when I receive my Food Handler certificate?
Thornhill Training’s Food Handler certificate is valid statewide. Some health departments and local jurisdictions require Food Handlers to register locally. Check with your local jurisdiction or health department in your area.
I work in the City of Austin. Am I required to register with the City Health Department?
No. After taking Thornhill Training’s course you are certified State-wide including Austin. No further registration is required.
How do I prove to the Health Department that I’m certified?
To prove that you are certified you job will require a copy of your certificate. The business that you work for is required to keep the information for the Health Department.
How do I replace a lost Food Handler certificate from Thornhill Training?

How long do I have to take the class?
All courses can be taken at your own pace. Classes are available 24×7.
I work in the City of Austin. Am I required to register with the City Health Department?
No. After taking Thornhill Training’s course you are certified State-wide including Austin. No further registration is required.
Food Handler Classes (Public and Private)
Is there an exam?
There is no exam at Thornhill Training’s private and public classes. Please note: the online certification does require an exam.

For your convenience we offer private classes for Food Handler Certification on-site.
How long is Thornhill Training’s Food Handler Class?
Depending on the size and involvement of the class, the time ranges from 1 to 1 ½ hours.
What do I need to bring to class?
You must show proof of a valid photo I.D. and bring your method of payment. We accept cash, check, money orders and credit card payments (we do not accept American Express).
What types of photo identification are acceptable?
Photographic identification is required for students attending the class: a current driver’s license, state identification card, student ID card, passport, etc.
How much does the Food Handler class cost?
The total cost is $20.00.
When will I receive my Food Handler Certificate?
You will receive your certificate at the end of class.
