What is Food Handler training?

As of September 1, 2016, Texas requires Food Handler training and certification to prevent foodborne illness.

Food Handler training is required for employees that work with unpackaged food, prepare, cook and serve food as well as handle equipment and utensils. Examples include; food prep, cook, dishwasher and wait staff.

Certification is valid for 2 years.

Thornhill Training provides online training as well as classes.

Austin

  • PRIVATE CLASS: We come to you and get your staff trained and certified all at once.
    • Available in Central Texas including Austin, San Antonio regions.
    • Classes available in Spanish and English.
    • No exam, everyone passes.
    • Certificate given at the end of class.
      Private class information.
  • CITY OF AUSTIN:  Food Handler training and registration.
    • Public classes in English and Spanish.
    • No exam, everyone passes.
    • Certificate given at the end of class.
      Austin Food Handler Information.
      By taking our class, food handlers will be certified in the State and the City of Austin.

San Antonio

  • PRIVATE CLASS: We come to you and get your staff trained and certified all at once.
    • Classes available in Spanish and English.
    • Two options for private food handler classes:

-Texas Food Handler Certification

-National ServSafe® Food Handler Certification (ANSI)

  • Texas Food Handler Certification (private class)
      • No exam, everyone passes.
      • Certificate given at the end of class. Note: once certified food handlers are required to register and pay a $15.45 registration fee to the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.
      • Class fee is based on the number of participants.
      • Certification is valid state wide.
  • National ServSafe® Food Handler Certification (ANSI)
      • Exam is required.
      • The ANSI class includes exam and class materials. Note:  For this ANSI program San Antonio Metropolitan Health District does NOT require the $15.45 registration fee.
      • Certification is valid state wide.
