General Food Handler Questions

What is Food Handler Training?

In Texas, local regulatory authorities (health department, city, county) may require Food Handler training to prevent food borne illness. Food safety training is for employees that prepare, cook and serve food as well as handle equipment and utensils.

People improperly handling food is a major factor responsible for foodborne illness. Education of the Food Handlers provides more qualified employees, thereby reducing the risk of foodborne illness outbreaks caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques.

Where is my Food Handler certificate valid?

Thornhill Training’s Food Handler certificate is valid in the State of Texas.

How long is the Food Handler certification valid?

Food Handler certification is valid for two years.

Are classes available in any other language besides English?

We currently hold public Food Handler Spanish classes in Austin. Private classes in other languages are available in the San Antonio, Houston and Austin regions. Please call Thornhill Training to find out if we can accommodate your needs.

How do I renew my Food Handler certification?

If it has been over two years since you took your previous Food Handler class then you will need to attend another class in order to get registered with the City. Food Handler certificates are only valid for two years. Please call 512.349.0400 to register or register online.

Do I need to register with the local Health Department when I receive my Food Handler certificate?

Thornhill Training’s Food Handler certificate is valid statewide. Some health departments and local jurisdictions require Food Handlers to register locally. Check with your local jurisdiction or health department in your area. Austin workers are automatically certified by us.

I work in the City of Austin. Am I required to register with the City Health Department?

Yes, the City requires food handler training and registration. The City registration fee is $12.
When you are purchasing the online food handler course choose the “City of Austin Food Handler” package. After you have successfully completed the course you will print out the State Food Handler certificate. Within 5 business days Thornhill Training will email you a certificate valid and accepted by the City of Austin. This is the certificate required by your employer and the Health Department.
We take the hassle away from you and get you registered with the City of Austin. Once you are certified you are set for two years.

How do I prove to the Health Department that I’m certified?

Show your certificate from Thornhill Training. If you have lost it, you can call Thornhill Training (512.349.0400) for a replacement, if it’s before the two year expiration date. The Health Department will also have your registration on file, just call 512.978.0300. You will just need to provide them with a name and date of birth.

How do I replace a lost Food Handler certificate from Thornhill Training?

Your Food Handler information is available on the City of Austin Food Handler Search website.

My food establishment permit is due for renewal. I’m aware that Food Handler registration info is required to renew. Besides Food Handlers’ names, what information is needed?

Are classes available in Spanish?

Yes. The Texas Certified Food Manager and Food Handler certifications are available in Spanish.

How long do I have to take the class?

All courses can be taken at your own pace. Classes are available 24×7.

How long is Thornhill Training’s Food Handler Class?

Depending on the size and involvement of the class, the time ranges from 1 to 1 ½ hours.

What do I need to bring to class?

You must show proof of a valid photo I.D. and bring your method of payment. We accept cash, check, money orders and credit card payments (we do not accept American Express).

What types of photo identification are acceptable?

Photographic identification is required for students attending the class: a current driver’s license, state identification card, student ID card, passport, etc.

How much does the Food Handler class cost?

The total cost is $32.00. That includes the $20.00 class price and the $12.00 registration fee with the City of Austin. If you are outside the Austin jurisdiction please let us know upon registration to adjust pricing.

When will I receive my Food Handler Certificate?

You will receive your certificate at the end of class.
